As Kayla stepped into a room, she yanked the curtain closed, sat on the bench, and pulled her knees to her chest. Was she really crossing the Australian Outback with a man she barely knew? And without a guide? Why was Yves so nervous each time she questioned him?
Her stomach hurt. She bounced her forehead on her knees. “Oh, God. Someone, please tell me what to do.”
The words of Grandmother Kingfisher’s Cherokee proverb had dogged her since she remembered part of it on the way to Martin’s cabin the first night of this trip. It popped into her mind now.
Pay attention to the whispers.
She laced her fingers through her hair. “Grandmother, what are you trying to tell me from heaven? And what’s the rest of that saying?” With no response from Grandmother Kingfisher, Kayla needed Nana’s advice. Now.
