Into the Fog: Josh Rivers

Pleased to Make Your Acquaintance

Hey, I’m Josh, the male protagonist in Karen Randau’s new book, Into the Fog. It’s the first book in her Peach Blossom Romantic Suspense Series, and it takes place right here where I grew up, married my high school sweetheart, got a master’s degree in Art History, and progressed to have a string of rotten luck.

Where It All Began

My first day serving with the Army Rangers in Afghanistan, I pull a fellow soldier off the rubble of a bombed marketplace. She doesn’t even notice the shrapnel sticking out of her abdomen. I convince her to focus on my eyes, and hers are like stirred up pools of honey that I can’t forget. Like, ever. It about drives me crazy for years. After losing my wife and kids in a car wreck, I finally get myself counseling at the VA without ever telling anyone about those eyes.

God the Comedian

Life can get lonely for a guy living in a cramped apartment above the auto shop he inherited when his folks passed away. So, I’m driving over Kingfisher Creek in our little town of Peach Blossom, and I’m having a quiet moment with God about my aloneness. I get an urge to stop, and there, face down with her legs in the icy water, is the woman of my nightmares. I’m thinking, very funny God. Anyone but her!

So, I address the issue of my aloneness again at church on Sunday, and I get this crazy notion to go sit on the other side of the room. Haha again, God, because the woman of my nightmares greets me, and her mother insists I sit next to them. I forget about that distraction when Pastor Joel uses the Apostle Peter to give a convincing argument about how it’s time to forgive myself and get back into the game of life. That leads to several bad decisions that have me partnering with Nightmare Woman to find a friend she claims got run down by a car but no one can find.

About Into the Fog

As it turns out, I don’t mind that Karen Randau set up this impossible situation for me to deal with in Into the Fog. She calls it my character arc when I finally figure out what’s been bothering me all these years and allow myself to love again.

I hope to see you with your nose buried in this book, because I guarantee you won’t expect all the twists and turns Karen throws in there! You might even find some inspiration in those pages.
